Panel discussion: The lived experiences of Black Women

Hosted by The Afro-Caribbean Mentorship Program & sponsored by The Royal Bank of Canada

Fri, March 26, 2021

7:00 PM – 9:00 PM EDT

https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/panel-discussionthe-lived-experiences-of-black-women-in-canadian-societies-tickets-145176148769

Afro-Caribbean Black (ACB) women continue to face unique challenges when facing moments of anti-Black racism. ACB women are racially discriminated against and increasingly pressured by mainstream society to modify their looks in an effort to feel a sense of acceptance. For instance, the beauty industry sets the white European standard of beauty while continuously villainizing Black women for not meeting its customs. Many ACB women feel the need to lighten their skin or apply excessive amounts of makeup to feel that they fit into the white standards of beauty. The ACMP is organizing a panel discussion with ACB women to set the tone about how ACB women should critically think about beauty and loving self.

OCDSB Indigenous Youth Symposium

(Virtual Event Series) with Silla - Wednesday March 31st 2021 from 6-7pm EST

We are happy to share that we will be hosting our annual Indigenous Youth Symposium this year through several virtual events from Feb to May.  These events will be directly for Indigenous students and families in the OCDSB to attend. Youth from the Original Voices Youth Council chose our lineup of guest speakers who will be joining us this year.

Our next guests will be Silla, a Juno Award nominated Throat Singing group, who will share with their experiences as performers and sharing their Inuit culture with the youth.

Police Involvement in Schools - Consultations

The OCDSB is holding a policy and practice review of the Police Involvement in Schools Policy. This includes a review of the School Resource Officer role in schools as well as a review of all activities that involve police in school that are identified as legally discretionary. Input will be sought on recommendations for the way forward.

Through this consultation, you are invited to join us for group discussions to gather perspectives on how and when administrators are involving the police in schools, including how they utilise the School Resource Officer; and the outcomes, impacts, including any unintended impacts.
