2019 RHS Concert Series

This semester, Ridgemont is hosting two concerts from visiting musicians. The first concert happened on November 13th and featured the group “Flutes Alors!” from Ottawa Chamberfest. Three musicians each played a variety of instruments from the recorder family to perform music from 400 years ago to now. They spoke about what it’s like to be a professional musician and answered questions from the audience. The next concert in the series is called “Yamo! Yamo!” and will feature traditional percussion music from West Africa. This concert will be on December 16th in the afternoon. In the morning, music classes will take part in traditional drum workshops.

Ridgemont Talent is Out of this World

Arts Night Fall 2019 was a resounding success. This is a highlight event for the music, dance, drama, visual arts and media arts classes and for our whole school community. Our students rose to the occasion. The performances were creative, engaging  polished. Our theme, Across the Universe was explored as Ridgemont musicians performed Gustav Holst’s The Planets: Jupiter, as drama students shared what it is like to enter the new “galaxy” of high school, and in the interactive workshops, face painting and photobooth set up by art students. The dance class amazed and energized the audience with Bollywood, Afro-Carribean and Hip Hop numbers. This year’s performances also included several duets and solos. Congratulations to Valentina, Hannah, Sarah, Sophie, Erika, Daniel, Ayla, Darldina, Ryan, Alice, Kierra, Meadow, Jeremy, and Jada. You rocked it, and we are in awe of your talents and bravery! The night ended with an iconic presentation of thriller by the dance class.

Thank you to the staff and administration who came and cheered, and most of all to the students who worked so hard to put the event together and their friends and families who showed up from “Across the Universe” and so full of support. We love bringing our school community together for an evening that celebrates our students and the arts. We can’t wait for the Spring edition of Arts Night!

Visual Arts

November 28th, eleven students in Visual Arts exhibited alongside other community artists in the show This is My Story: Moments of Transformation at SAW Gallery. Work was auctioned off in support of Ancoura, a not-for-profit, that supports housing solutions for adults with mental illness. Well done to our student artists.

Grade 10 Media Arts

How do we build bridges across generations? Our Grade 10 Media Arts class has been working with Youth Ottawa’s Youth Action Media on an inter-generational stories project. Students are learning about filming techniques while exploring what connects us. Students met with their senior partners and moved quickly from being shy and unsure about how they would relate, to realizing the value in listening and sharing stories to build understanding. Students will host their senior partners at Ridgemont on December 5th in order to film them. They will then meet again to screen their edited films. This has been a rich and rewarding experience so far, and we look forward to sharing these stories on film with our larger community in the next few months.media arts
