Give a little…help a lot – Students helping students

Dear Parents and/or Guardians,

When kids come to our schools with hungry tummies, we help feed them.
When they can’t afford winter boots or a coat, we find them warmth for the winter.
When kids don’t have a backpack full of supplies for school, we provide them.
More than 15,000 students in the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB) live in poverty. Every day these students come to school without vital medication, are hungry and do not have warm winter clothes due to socio-economic challenges out of their control.
The Education Foundation of Ottawa (EFO), an independent charity, works with the OCDSB to help provide these students with the tools they need to learn and grow.

We cannot do this alone. We need your help.

In the first five months of the 2016/17 school year, we have provided over $140,000 in funding to OCDSB students in need.

Thanks to the generosity of students and staff at 101 of our 143 schools last year we raised more than $40,000 to support emergent needs of students in 126 OCDSB schools. Now you can help
too through our Toonie Tuesday fundraiser.
On February 27th, 2018 please consider sending your child with a Toonie (or more) to help meet the most basic needs for our students which are not funded by the school board or Ministry of Education. Thank you!

Proceeds raised on Toonie Tuesday are invested in our students through the Students in Crisis Emergency Fund to support food, clothing, medical needs and other extraordinary and emergency needs of individual students brought about by financial hardship.
Thank you for helping students in need. For more information please visit

Below is a snapshot of some of our most utilized programs:
Student in Crisis Fund (Emergency Fund)
The Students in Crisis Fund supports the emergency needs of individual students brought about by financial hardship. We grant funds for individual student’s needs such food, winter coats, boots, hats, mitts, as well as funding emergency medication needs such as Epi-pens and other medications where the family cannot afford it.
Active Living Bursary Fund (Arts, Athletics, Education, Field Trips, Camps)
Bursaries are provided to individual students to help meet the needs for activity and involvement both inside and outside of school hours. Funds are granted for individual students who are faced with socioeconomic challenges and otherwise would not be able to participate in positive student activities such as sports, camp, music, leadership, enrichment programs and studies abroad. In addition,
support is provided to students who would not be able to participate in field trips, educational outings or other opportunities outside the classroom.
Glenview Management Healthy Snack Program
The Glenview Management Healthy Snack program provides nutritional snacks in the classroom for those students who may not receive enough nourishment outside school hours. It also helps students focus in the classroom. In 2016/17 more than 9,000 healthy snacks were provided each week to 53 OCDSB schools.
Autism Water Safety Program
Each year the EFO provides funds for swimming and water safety lessons to students with Autism in the OCDSB. These are lifesaving lessons as drowning is one of the most prevalent causes of death amongst autistic individuals. In 2016/17, 229 students received these lessons.
Tools for Learning - Backpacks
Each year children come to school empty handed. Feeling behind before they even start. Unfortunately hundreds of students start school the school year without backpacks and critical school supplies. Thanks to our generous donors, we are able to provide these tools to students and ensure they start off on a level playing field by providing more than 1,000 backpacks and supplies each year.
