Re: Investigation of a Case of Tuberculosis (TB) at Ridgemont High School

Dear Parent/Guardian/Staff,

Ottawa Public Health (OPH) has determined that certain students and staff at Ridgemont High School may have been exposed to a person with active tuberculosis (TB) disease between September 4, 2018 and November 12, 2018. These students, their parents/guardians, and staff will receive personalized communication from OPH recommending testing for TB. OPH staff will be at the school during the week of December 10 to 13, 2018 to conduct screening clinics for TB infection for these identified students and staff.

Important note: This letter is information for all parents/guardians and staff. Those requiring testing will be given a letter at school on December 3, 2018.

The purpose of the testing is to identify if a person has breathed in the TB bacteria and developed latent TB infection or LTBI. When a person has latent TB infection, TB bacteria have entered the body but are dormant (sleeping) and not growing. A person with latent TB infection does not feel sick and is not contagious – they cannot pass TB bacteria to another person. However, without treatment, a small percentage of people with latent TB infection may develop active TB disease later in their life.

OPH is not aware of any person currently infectious with TB who is attending or working at Ridgemont High School.

A fact sheet on TB is enclosed for your information. OPH will also be holding a general information session on December 4, 2018 at 19:00 at Ridgemont High School.

If you have any questions or concerns, please call Ottawa Public Health at 613-580-2424 extension 24224 to speak to a public health nurse.

Sincerely,
